Day 23: A song that you want to play for your first child
jonsi - around us, go do, and sinking friendships

i'm so happy i found these acoustic versions of songs off of his solo record. they're even more hypnotic than their album counterparts. they're way better than what i expected to find. this whole meme was worth it just so i could find these songs and covet the dvd they're from.

Day 22: A song that you want to play at your funeral
iron & wine - each coming night and naked as we came

if i had my way, my funeral would fall on one of those warm seattle summer evenings right before it becomes autumn in earnest. and after all the official stuff was over, people would sort of spontaneously find themselves hanging out in the parking lot drinking beer and whiskey, talking about good times and bad, and listening to these songs.

iron & wine - weary memory

and then when you got home, you'd get into bed and you'd listen to this one as you're falling asleep. you couldn't help but smile then.

Day 22: A song that you want to play at your funeral
iron & wine - sodom, south georgia

this is my absolute favorite iron & wine song and i'm glad that the video i found for it was from a performance at the vera project. i discovered iron & wine at a show there way back in 2004 when he was touring in support of the creek that drank the cradle. we all sat on the floor and no one talked as sam beam played song after song with very little banter in between. his wife and daughters were there, too. a couple of his kids were running around, climbing on stuff and chasing each other. and his wife sat in the front with their smallest daughter asleep in her lap. it was just one of those small, totally unexpected, completely perfect moments.

Day 21: A song that you want to play at your wedding
iron & wine - love and some verses

iron & wine - sunset soon forgotten

iron & wine - fever dream

iron & wine - passing afternoon

i need iron & wine to write the soundtrack to my life. also, i can't dance so i need to pad this with as many slow songs as possible. sorry, theoretical future wife.

Day 20: A song that reminds you of getting dumped
the replacements - unsatisfied

the ultimate breakup song, in my opinion—and greg mottola (superbad, paul) as well because he used it in the relevant scene in adventureland. you may know it better as 'the movie jesse eisenberg was in before the social network made him super famous' or 'the movie kristen stewart made it through without exhibiting a single recognizable human emotion' or even 'the movie that should have ended with the replacement's 'unsatisfied' playing in the background before the actual last scene'.

imogen heap - hide and seek

okay, i'm not super proud of this—maybe i should add this to my imaginary blog, 'things i do that mark driscoll disapproves of'—but i listened to this song a lot the last time i was dumped. super petulant, i know. in my defense, there are a few good turns of phrase in this one. and a few howlers.

also, is this a song for women? when the crowd sings the bridge and imogen heap is vamping, it's clear that it's basically just women singing. are men and women supposed to experience breakups differently? i always felt like this song described the experience pretty universally. am i doing it wrong?
